FABIO

Cover Model Fabio He's known as the King of Romance. His face and body have graced over one million romance covers. Just the sound of his voice has been known to induce women to tears of euphoria. One look into his magnetic eyes, and many are forever lost. If you've never heard of him, you must have been living under a rock for the past few years. Just one name, just one man: he's Fabio.

On March 15, 1959, a legend was born to the prominent Lanzoni family in Milan, Italy. Had his family had any idea the furor their golden-haired, blue-eyed son would cause, they may never have allowed him to come to America! Fabio's father, the owner of a conveyor belt factory, expected his son to join in the family business and was slightly distressed when Fabio decided to pursue modeling as a career.

After serving a mandatory stint in the Italian Army, Fabio began modeling for top designers. He literally outgrew this field, as the muscular physique that makes him so popular was too large for the clothes he wore. Following a friend's advice, he moved to the states where he became a popular model for GAP ads and many sportswear designers.

Cover Model Fabio Though it was the world of romance that would skyrocket Fabio's career, he actually began posing for fantasy novel covers first. The wonderful illustrator Elaine Duillo was the first to recognize Fabio's appeal. She painted his first two covers, ENCHANTRESS MINE by Bertrice Small and Johanna Lindsey's HEARTS AFLAME. These led to assignments that would make Fabio a household name. His name became synonymous with romance and it was soon impossible to pick up a romance novel that didn't bear his handsome face.

Fabio has always had a great deal of love and respect for the romance industry, and it was this love that prompted him to write his own novels. In October 1993, Kensington published the first romance novel written by a man in his own name, PIRATE by Fabio. Veteran author Eugenia Riley took Fabio's tape-recorded tales (in romantic Italian, of course) and transcribed them into English text. Thus was the eighteenth-century adventure born. PIRATE was followed by VIKING and ROGUE, and there will be more books in the future.

Due to his many projects, Fabio officially retired from posing (except for his own covers) in 1993. A heartfelt sigh of despair was heard around the world at the thought of no more Fabio on romance covers. But those same fans were pleased when Fabio announced that he would be doing several calendars, a cassette of romantic songs entitled FABIO AFTER DARK, and a fitness video.

Cover Model Fabio The success of those ventures and his firm belief in physical and spiritual good health led him to start his own magazine, "Fabio, Healthy Bodies." Fabio, a non-drinker and non-smoker, has long promoted clean living and would like all of his fans, and indeed the world, to embrace his mentality of taking care of the body and soul.

Fabio is branching out in many ways. Not only is he taking an active role in the fitness world, but he is poised for Hollywood stardom as well. Fans can see him in the "I Can't Believe It's Not Butter" commercials where he displays a wonderful sense of humour. "Acapulco H.E.A.T.," an action/adventure series, stars Fabio as a suave billionaire heading a top-level government organization. Though the show does contain some level of violence, Fabio made sure that his role was not a violent one. He wants to promote a world without all of the guns, hatred and anger that currently pervade our society.

The death of his grandmother from cancer led Fabio to become a spokesperson for the American Cancer Society. In an ad that stated "Lips are meant for kissing, not for smoking," Fabio clearly advocates a smoke-free state.

Despite his image as a romance-loving playboy, Fabio is actually a very positive role model for people everywhere. That muscular body encases a sensitive and loving heart, and he has a love of humanity that is spectacular. No matter what this King of Romance does, he is sure to keep winning the hearts and adoration of many.
