Women of all ages and backgrounds, domestically and
internationally, faithfully read Romantic Times BOOKclub
magazine. Reading is more than a pastime, it's a major interest
in the lives of our readers.
There is no typical reader of RT BOOKclub magazine; she ranges
from high powered executive and college student to working mother
and single career woman. Young women with dreams and fantasies
share their books with their mothers and grandmothers because
novels address the eternal escape fantasy of living out
adventures and for romance readers it addresses the fantasy of
falling in love with Mr. Right. Romance novels reinforce
traditional values of commitment and a happy ending. (All the
things that women usually don't experience - at least not the
first time around!)
In fact, romance novels offer the ultimate fantasy: getting an
alpha male to commit. In a world where violence, profanity, and
promiscuity dominate TV and films, romance novels are an oasis to
a woman's sensibilities and sensitivities.
Avid fiction lovers are addicted to reading and constitute the
ultimate in a diverse group of women - all ages, all backgrounds,
all economic classes. Data derived from publishers reveal that
the median age of a woman's fictio readers is 35, but ranges from
18 to 85. Most possess at least two years of college experience,
and half work outside the home. Amazingly enough, between 10 and
40 books a month is the average reading list - constituting a
$1200 price tag for their books each year. Hobbies of women's
fiction readers include cooking, crafts, and collectibles (e.g.,
dolls, jewelry, plates).
Qualities that unite fiction lovers? A lifetime love of the
written word, a passion for history and knowledge, and arm-chair
travel. There is also a desire to escape modern stress for a few
hours. Librarians report that romance novels are the most widely
borrowed books.
Recently, more men have taken up romance reading because they
want to truly understand and please women. Psychologists have
also discovered that romance readers are warmer, more sensual,
and have better sex lives!
