MEET THE RT BOOKREVIEWS REVIEWER RAVEN HALLER
(Article published in Romantic Times BOOKreviews Issue #297, November 2008)
RT readers may not be aware that our main reviewer for Teen Scene is an
actual, honest-to-goodness teenager. Each month, 17-year-old Raven Haller
tackles a mix of young adult books and lets us know what their intended
audience really thinks.
When she's not reviewing books for RT, Raven's a senior in high school,
looking at colleges in preparation for her dream job: editor. "I would love
to be a book editor, but really working with any kind of writing would be
fine with me," she says. And she's getting practice writing already.
"Besides the book reviews, this is my second year in AP English, and I
write poetry that's been published in my school's literary magazine."
Where do you live? Linthicum, Md.
Pets: Two dogs, Katie and Jazzi
Day job: High school student/volunteer karate instructor
How did you come to RT BOOKreviews? At the end of August last year my mom,
who is an RT subscriber, saw an ad in the magazine asking for YA reviewers
to submit sample reviews. She knows how much I love to read and write and
told me about it. I sent in an e-mail with a sample review ... and now it's
been over a year that I've been reviewing for RT and I still love it.
Favorite real-life heroine: My mom; she's a cancer survivor. In addition to
beating cancer, and despite continuing medical problems, she's both a
practicing psychologist and a mom. She's definitely the main reason I love
to read ... our house is full of books, and the one thing she's always
willing to buy are more books.
Book you are an evangelist for: There is no specific book, but I am
definitely an evangelist for reading in general and how important and
wonderful it is.
Book that changed your life: LOOKING FOR ALASKA by John Green. It raises a
lot of great points about being a teenager -- how rough life can be, how
confusing it is and how important it is to forgive our own mistakes. I love
the language of the novel and the way I can relate to the main character,
even though he's a guy. Green's book reminded me to enjoy every moment I
have with the people I care about.
Book that you bought for the cover: THE EARTH, MY BUTT AND OTHER BIG ROUND
THINGS, by Carolyn Mackler
Favorite TV shows: I don't watch much TV, so I don't really have any ... (I
know, I'm a weird teenager).
Hobbies: Karate, reading, writing and spending time with my friends.
Lifelong ambition: These days you see so many people who are unhappy with
their lives, and so I guess my goal is to live a life I can be content
with.
Your best feature or talent: Well, my friends have told me I bring out the
best in people.
