The Word by Irving Wallace -- the 70's DaVinci Code

I was just wondering if anyone read The Word by Irving Wallace. I read it when it came out in the 70's. It's about another gospel being found that said that Jesus didn't die on the cross but traveled to Rome. At the time it came out I don't remember much controversy about it because it was fiction. Anyone remember it -- the DVC was much better IMHO. My Catholic Telegraph said there was a lot of hoopla when it came out but as I said, I don't remember any. I suspect the uproar over DVC will be forgotten too.
