I went to AC Moore last night to look at the beading supplies and they were playing Christmas music. Not the occasional song mixed in with the regular music. No! Every single song was a Christmas one.
Even though I don't celebrate Christmas, there are some songs that I do like. But the speakers in AC Moore weren't playing any of the ones I like. And the last one literally drove me out of the store. It was awful, awful! It wasn't a traditional Christmas song. It was one of those modern ones that tries to throw everything into the mix: snow, turkey dinner, Santa, presents, angels singing, etc. The so-called "song" had no rhythm, no medley of any kind. It was all over the place. And there was a chorus of fake falsetto voices in the background. It was horrible! I can't even describe it. It made me literally run out of the store.
If I never hear that song again it will be too soon. _________________ ~~rhiannon~~

Definitely. They bring it out too early and take it away too fast. It's so obvious that merchants are only interested in our $ and not the season.
I love Thanksgiving and they skip it entirely!
And while you're mentioning songs -- I can't stand The Christmas Shoes. I practically vomit every time I hear it. _________________ There are only two ways to live your life. One is as though nothing is a miracle. The other is as though everything is.

I love christmas music but yes!! It is way too early for them to be playing it yet. I'm with you - I love Thanksgiving and it's just being overlooked these days. Starting the christmas music music the day after Thanksgiving is plenty early enough for me!! _________________ Nothing beats a hammock in the shade, a light breeze, books to read and lots of time to enjoy them!! |

I saw my first Christmas commercial of the year the other night, it was for Overstock.
I seriously would have complained about the Christmas music and how it drove me out of their store. It's way too early - we just got past Halloween for goodness sakes!
This proves a pet peeve of mine, that now our society celebrates Halloween almost as much as Christmas, skips past Thanksgiving and then goes right into the Christmas season. |

I saw my first christmas commercial and it was for Walmart! Way to early for it. As for Christmas music, I haven't heard any yet, but can't wait to pull out my Josh Gorbin CD. By far that is one of the best ones. _________________ Debra

Maybe we ignore Thanksgiving because all we usually buy for it is food, though some people do decorate for it. With Halloween there are the costumes and decorations and party supplies. And Christmas is the biggest commercial holiday of the year. Some businesses can make more in the Christmas season than they can all the rest of the year. Thanksgiving isn't commercially viable. That's my guess, anyway. _________________ ~~rhiannon~~

Yeah...started hearing it on November 1st. Will be sick of Christmas music by December 1st.
At least the IHOP "nutcracker" commercial is funny about it. ("It's so wrong.") _________________ Civilizations don't die. They commit suicide. |

I'm usually tired of Christmas commercials and songs by Thanksgiving!?!? Especially when you see the same commercial for a store over and over and over.

i think all of this trend began when with so many of our men & women in the military all around the world and the need to shop early enough to ship Xmas decorations & gifts to them, then the businesses figured the music would get you in the buying mood. But I agree it gets old really quickly. _________________ We are the ones we have been waiting for. - Hopi Elders

You're being kind LOL. I think it's greed, pure and simple. My parents were the WWII generation and they didn't put up the tree until 3 days before Christmas. I'm the Vietnam generation -- the start of Christmas always started with the Macy's Thanksgiving Day parade. However, I will say I started putting my tree up earlier and earlier because I loved the decorations and feeling of Christmas. When they started coming up with an artifical tree that actually looked good, I put it up right after Thanksgiving.
So I blame it on good artificial trees and stupid baby boomers like myself! Now that we've started it, it's taken on a life of its own and we can't stop it! _________________ There are only two ways to live your life. One is as though nothing is a miracle. The other is as though everything is.

Yes, it's consumer-driven. When my kids were little to be funny I used to give a little scream whenever we'd drive past a house where the Christmas decorations were out and lit before Thanksgiving.
I'd scream myself hoarse now. _________________ Civilizations don't die. They commit suicide. |

It's just as bad to have to deal with the music and decorations long after Christmas. I once had a seasonal job in a kiosk in a mall in Michigan. My job began at the end of October and ran through the end of January. While the mall had taken down their Christmas decorations in the first week of January, they were still playing Christmas music throughout the entire mall until the third week in January. I thought I was going to go insane! And neighbors had their Christmas decorations on their house and lawn until March. _________________ ~~rhiannon~~

I don't think it's greed necessarily.... It's capitalism: The American Way. We have a retail-driven economy, and Christmas spending is a HUGE part of that. The music and the commercials and the decorations are supposed to inspire you to be in the Christmas frame of mind and buy, buy, buy. Buy early...buy often. I don't think that's greed; it's just how free enterprise and capitalism works in this country. And the advertising and marketing people exploit that by making it all seem so idyllic and appealing. But they're just doing their jobs. It still goes back to capitalism.
I don't mind the Christmas music and decorations up in the stores. I expect that. But it DOES bother me to hear Christmas music on the RADIO stations this early. Two of my local easy-listening stations are already interspersing Christmas songs in their playlist during the week, and then their weekends are all Christmas music. It's kind of annoying. And it annoys me to see the decorations up in the parking lots and external areas of the shopping centers.
In 2004, my family (self, parents, brother and SIL) made a unanimous decision that money was tight for all of us, and so we just weren't going to do Christmas gifts. We've pretty much stuck to that for the last 4-5 years, and plan to do the same this year. I think last year I probably spent a total of about $300, and that includes the few gifts I bought plus whatever charitable giving I did (Angel tree, book drives, Salvation Army red buckets).
Making the commitment to not spend a lot on gifts has been great...and liberating. When I work at the bookstore and I'm at the register, customers will ask if I'm "ready" for Christmas or "done" with my shopping, and I get to say, "Yes!" No stress. No hassles. No waiting in lines, no dealing with shopping mall traffic. It IS a little sad to not get gifts from my parents, etc., but honestly...the things I'd really like to receive (like a digital camera) is the type of thing they can't afford to buy for me, and I'd rather they not just spend their money on STUFF. |

My family quit exchanging about that same time. My parents are both gone so for me, getting together with my siblings at some time during the holidays is the best present. My DH's family has a $10 exchange (reduced from $20 last year). It's white elephant style, meaning you don't buy for one particular person. This year it has to be something "consumable". I'm not quite sure what that means but it sounds like something you use up. I might buy $10 worth of toilet paper LOL. _________________ There are only two ways to live your life. I'm such a goon that I'd LOVE to receive $10 worth of toilet paper! (I never buy the big packs because they're so expensive. Ha!) |
