BLACKHEART by Tamara Leigh

Desperate to put an end to the humiliating rumors surrounding his lack of an heir, Lord Bernart Kinthorpe orders his virgin wife to the bed of his sworn enemy, Lord Gabriel de Vere. Though Juliana expects to feel revulsion and pain in the arms of the blackheart responsible for her husband's impotence, she discovers a man of passion and honor. When Gabriel de Vere learns that the sensual lover who had come to him in darkness is the wife of his enemy, he vows to take back the child stolen from him. Yet something about the woman he abducts turns him from vengeance. But the flower of their love will have to be carefully nurtured if they are to triumph over Lord Bernart and raise the child of their love as fate has intended.

SAVING GRACE by Julie Garwood

When Lady Johanna learned that she was a widow, she vowed she would never marry again. Only sixteen, already she possessed a strength of will that impressed all who looked past her golden-haired beauty. Yet when King John demanded that she remarry and selected a bridegroom for her--it seemed she must acquiesce, until her beloved foster brother suggested she wed his friend, the handsome Scottish warrior Gabriel MacBain.

At first Johanna was shy, but as Gabriel tenderly revealed the splendid pleasures they would share, she came to suspect that she was falling in love with her gruff new husband. And it was soon apparent to the entire Highlands clan that their brusque, gallant laird had surrendered his heart completely. But now a desperate royal intrigue threatened to tear her from his side--and to destroy the man whose love meant more to her than she had ever dreamed!

I have read both and loved them! But those aren't the one I am thinking of. I definitely need to re-read those two, thanks!

Do you remember anything else about the book? It might be easier to find if we know more details.

I really don't remember much about it other than it being European and during a time of war.

It's definitely not Bertrice Small, I tried to read one of her books and could not even get through a couple of chapters. I keep thinking it might be Stephanie Laurens but none of her stories seems to fit.

I think in the book I am looking for there is also a scene in the winter time in a carriage. But I can't remember if she is with the hero or trying to escape from her husband.

The heroines of the following books have evil husband and fall in love with his enemy.

THE HEART AND THE ROSE by Nancy Richards-Akers

A DELICATE ROSE

The war with the rebel Scots has cost Lady Claricia de Clinton everything she holds dear -- her family, her innocence and her cherished dreams of happiness. She has learned to survive by trusting no man. And now she has become the captive of a dashing enemy -- a bold and brazen highland outlaw whom she dares not desire, but whose power over her heart and soul wil redefine her future.

A HEART UNCHAINED

Branded a criminal, an outcast in his own land, Alexander Kirkpatrick is sworn to vengeance against the English -- and Lady Claricia, the beautiful niece of his enemy, is the perfect pawn in his calculated scheme. But the proud Scottish warrior's icebound heart cannot withstand the emotions Claricia has ignited within him -- a searing blaze of unrestrained passion that awakens Alexander to a destiny more powerful than clan and duty ... and to a love more precious than life itself.

P.S. It is the second book in a trilogy.

HIGHLAND ANGEL by Hannah Howell

Sir Payton Murray's reputation as a lover is rivaled only by his prowess with the sword, yet it is the latter gift that has captured the interest of Kirstie MacLye. Fleeing a murderous husband who left her for dead, she vows to expose the man for the vile scoundrel that he is. She also knows it will take planning, cunning, and the help of a brave, arrogant, and willing champion. Kirstie only prays that Sir Payton will accept her challenge.

Risking the ire of his own clan and hers, Payton nonetheless cannot ignore Kirstie's desperate plea or her captivating beauty. For he knows that nothing will deter the spirited lass from bringing an evil man to justice, even if she must do it alone. Joining her on this crusade, he embarks upon a dangerous quest against a powerful enemy only too eager to destroy them both. And as they venture into a treacherous world of blood and honor, Payton must fight for his life and his heart, locked in battle to claim the love of his.

P.S. Would you recognize the cover? Is the book you are looking for newer or older?

It's neither of those two books. I read it in the last 7 years and I think it was an older book from the 90s. I don't remember much of the cover except that it was just one colour (blue or yellow). I don't remember there being any design on the cover or an instep with the h/h.
