We
have sympathy for the girls we consider to be bad, for we know that,
ultimately, they may be good girls that have done "bad things." The
perfect example is Rizzo from "Grease," one of our favorite bad
girls. Rizzo doesn't want to be a Sandra Dee who follows the rules;
she has spark, enthusiasm and wants to enjoy life. Unfortunately,
her choices get her into trouble and get her the rep of being a bad
girl, rather than a good girl who just wants to have fun.
Bad girls are more than what meets the eye: A is for
Attitude, B is for Brazen, C is for Charismatic, D is for
Delinquent, E is for Energy, F is for Femme Fatale, G is for
Gumption, H is for Heroic, I is for Initiative, J is for Jezebel, K
is for Kinetic, L is for Legendary, M is for Misbehaving, N is for
Nymphomaniac, O is for Original, P is for Paradox, Q is for
Quixotic, R is for Rapturous, S is for Spirit, T is for Tenacious, U
is for Unique, V is for Vixen, W is for Wanton, X is for X-Rated, Y
is for Youthful and Z is for Zeal!
What's The Appeal?
Sugar and spice and everything nice, that's what little girls are
made of-good little girls that is. Bad girls are PURE spice. As
little girls we were sometimes taught to repress our real thoughts
and feelings. We were told to put others' feelings and interests
before our own. These socialization skills can make us passive and
as we reach maturity, that passivity represents femininity.
When men express aggressive or assertive behavior, they are
encouraged and complimented. When women express those same
characteristics they are condemned for being "unfeminine" and also
are considered "bitchy." Some behavior is arbitrarily deemed bad by
some people. And sometimes a character in a novel-male or
female-takes criminal action and thus is considered malicious, be
they con artists, kidnappers or even murderers. If their actions can
be justified their behavior will be forgiven by other characters in
the book and ultimately by the harshest critic-the reader.
Bad girls don't do what other people want them to; bad girls act on
impulse, act for themselves and do what they want. In most cases,
these are gals who exhibit sass, guts, gumption and, of course,
attitude with a capital A. What kind of man is attracted to a bad
girl? One that is looking for a liberated woman, who isn't going to
allow herself to be directed. The added advantage with a woman who
expresses herself emotionally is that she is usually less inhibited
sexually as well. Shakespeare understood this when he wrote "The
Taming of the Shrew," for Kate's unbridled and tempestuous
personality may be tamed, but never mastered.
