Jack Finney started it all with Time and Again, the wonderful novel which took a modern-day couple and sent them back in time to turn-of-the-century New York and Brooklyn. The book was magical–and readers responded. In fact, many were inspired to write their own time travels. You may be surprised to learn that most of the authors on our list attribute their interest in the genre and their first inspiration to this unique and very special novel. If you haven't yet read this marvelous book that started it all, we recommend that you put it on the top of your "to-be-read" list!

There is no denying the popularity of romances that feature characters who travel in time to find love and romance. Whatever time period is visited–Restoration England, the antebellum South, the Wild West or Bonnie Prince Charlie's Scotland–readers love to view history through modern eyes. But time travel isn't limited to simply going back in time. Many time travels now feature characters who come from the past into the present, bring characters into the future or even go back and forth! We have organized the books according to direction of the time travel to help you select. Enjoy!

What's The Appeal?

Romances began borrowing paranormal elements from science fiction novels in the seventies and early eighties. After the success of Jack Finney's runaway bestseller and the novelty of Anya Seton's Green Darkness, readers began clamoring for books which set contemporary characters in their favorite historical settings.

The advantage of being from the present day is that you have a record of what has already passed. Historians have shown us what has already happened, so when a modern character goes back in time, they have the advantage of knowing what will happen in the future. The question is: should the information be shared? If it is, will anyone believe it? And more importantly, will the presence of a character from "the future" alter the course of history in any way?

The 20th century has given us amazing developments: life-saving penicillin; time-saving airplanes;the comfort and convenience of hot running water, relationship-saving deodorant; and of course, the almost as crucial inventions of Tampax and contact lenses. There's a lot the modern woman has to give up if she finds herself back in time. Is it worth it?

Once she finds the hero, it is. Yet, the ensuing discomforts and challenges offer quite a few hilarious moments along the way. Once most heroines accept the loss of modern conveniences, they find they must adjust to something even more difficult: a woman's role in the past. The heroine may not lose her independence, but she'll certainly have to fight for it.

But just as the past offers challenges to 20th-century women, it offers the kind of men fantasies are made of: knights, Vikings, pirates and highwaymen–heroes who make it well worth putting up with a few minor inconveniences.
