Setting: 14th-century Scottish Borders

Once again Sinclair demonstrates her ability to touch readers' minds and hearts, keeping them enthralled. Her deft handling of her characters' emotional evolution, backed by her talent for presenting them in a plot that's both witty and sensual, is captivating.

Summary: As a boy Cole McTiernay witnessed the killing of his best friend by an Englishman. Consequently, he's emotionally cold and hates anything British. Death and starvation have left the wild northern highlands without leadership, and Cole is asked to become the laird and lead them to peace. In an attempt to get Cole to drop his tight hold on his feelings, his brother sends him to retrieve an undisclosed "parcel" from an English baron.

Ellenor Howell's ruthless brother-in- law assumed her guardianship in order to marry her off for his personal gain. Now, Cole's arrival presents her with the opportunity for escape. Cole is far from amused to learn the "parcel" is Ellenor. The return trip is long and arduous but does have the desired effect on Cole, who frees himself from his walled emotions. As he and Ellenor become more tolerant of each other, their relationship undergoes several dramatic changes: Bitterness, angst, hate and love all occur as the story rushes toward an ideal conclusion.
