| This powerful book is about what
people will do to hide secrets. A
full panoply of motivations is on display, from love and loyalty to illness and greed. Unfortunately, this book
is peopled with mostly unsavory or unlikable characters. The protagonist, abused and defeated at nearly every turn, is so misguided, mentally ill and at times stupid that she tarnishes what is otherwise a well-written book.
Summary: Three years after being
convicted of setting a fatal house fire that killed most of her family members, Claire Bannister is released from the mental hospital where she's been
incarcerated. Although innocent of
the crime, Claire chooses to protect
the identity of the true culprit.
While searching for her boyfriend, Billy, Claire relies on the help of a kind attorney, Richard Quenell, who hides secrets of his own. And unbeknownst
to Claire, her bitter stepmother, Sisley, waits patiently for an opportunity to blackmail Claire, willing to do anything to discover the secret of the arsonist's identity. (MUNDANIA, Aug., 252
