Summary: Emma Perotti, a middle-
aged educator at New York's Welcome School, teaches classes to newly arrived
immigrants. An-ling Huang only attends one class, and Emma doesn't see her again until they meet by chance almost a year later, but she befriends the girl, helping her pay the rent on a loft and making her part of her own family.
Their relationship takes on a dark tone when Emma starts to view An-ling as a replacement for her daughter, who died as a toddler. When Emma moves out of her family's apartment and into An-ling's loft, her husband, Tom, is convinced that the women are lovers. But the truth is even more disturbing, as An-ling's lies threaten to destroy Emma. (SOHO PRESS, Jul., 288 pp., $22.00)
