In the first book in a new urban fantasy series, Andrews takes the by-now familiar trope of vampires and werewolves among the mundanes and gives it a slight twist. Kate is an enjoyable heroine, even if she
is somewhat indistinguishable from the tough-talking, weapon-wielding heroines of other books in this genre. The plot moves along at a pleasant clip, and the world-building is interesting and well done.
Summary: Kate Daniels is an Atlanta mercenary who makes her living by cleaning up magical problems. When her guardian is murdered, she takes it upon herself to investigate. She ends up pulled between the two major
magical factions: the Pack, which is composed of shape-shifters, and the Masters of the Dead, who are necromancers who control vampires.
