| In this chapter of the Tempe Crabtree series, the heroine solves not one but two mysteries. The use of Native American methods to communicate
with a departed spirit provides an especially haunting scene. But the
inclusion of native legends detracts from the story.
Summary: Deputy Tempe and her husband, Hutch, a minister, live in Bear Creek, a small town in the Southern Sierra. A phone call in the middle of the night draws the couple into a murder investigation. The victim's death appears to be from natural causes,
but suspicions soon arise.
At the same time, Tempe finds
herself caught up in another investigation -- the suicide of a woman that looks like murder. Tempe ignores her superior's orders to remove herself
from these cases and also disregards her husband's concerns about contacting dead spirits. Will she survive these mysteries with her job and marriage intact? (MUNDANIA PRESS, Sep. '06, 154
pp., $11.00)
