| This collection of short stories
is devoted to the bad girls of fantasy. Unfortunately, as the whole it's rather
lackluster and repetitive. Perhaps this is because the majority of the stories are about "bad girls" associated with European mythology, specifically that of Greece.
Despite this, there are a few stories worth reading: Greg Beatty's "Mother of Monsters," Scott William Carter's "Heart of Stone" and Lisa Silverthorne's "Soul Taker." All three take a hard look at their respective Greek "bad girls" (Echidna, Medusa and Celeano, respectively) and twist readers around until they can't help but see them from a different perspective.
But one risk in shifting perspectives like this is that these iconic characters can become simply ordinary. That's a problem in the other stories but only a minor annoyance in these three. This isn't to say that all of the women have been rendered harmless. There are plenty of unrepentantly bad protagonists as well. (Jul., 320 pp., $7.99)
