| Teacher Kendra Clayton is back, this time juggling her personal, professional and friendship issues and playing detective. Timmy, a student on the verge of taking his GED, has been framed for murder, and Kendra is convinced
he's innocent.
While sneaking around town, trying to get to the bottom of the crime, she encounters some shady dealings by
a young student who works with her,
a drug dealer seeking revenge and a preacher who seemingly charms the panties off quite a few of his parishioners. It's not Kendra's plan to get tangled up with any of them, but she does. In gathering the information necessary to clear Timmy's name, she also puts her life at risk.
What's most appealing about Kendra (who was introduced in The Company You Keep) is that she's not actually a detective, she's an average person who manages to solve a crime by snooping around, putting herself in harm's way
to help others. It's an endearing quality and makes the reader want to know more about her. With other appealing characters and witty dialogue, this is an enjoyable read. (Jun., 304 pp., $13.95)
