 by Gammy L. Singer
RT Rating: ½ Category: CONTEMPORARY ROMANCE Publisher: Dafina Published: March 2006 Type: Mainstream Fiction (African-American) |
| Readers of Singer's first novel, A Landlord's Tale, got to see Amos Brown turn his life around. In Singer's sophomore offering, landlord Brown is still working hard at staying honest.
This story is full of intriguing, down-and-out characters. Brown's tenants range from bad to worst. But he's fond of them, which means he's not getting rich any time soon. When Deacon Steadwell, an 83-year-old tenant, is charged with murder, Brown puts up the bail money -- then Steadwell promptly disappears.
At this point, the novel reads like a mystery. This a book most readers won't be able to put down. It's busy, with some characters' lives intertwining. Singer is an author to watch, especially if she writes more about Amos and his brood of tenants. (Mar., 224 pp., $15.00)
