| This fun first in a new series set in swinging 1964 introduces naive Southern belle Bebe Bennett. Bebe, with her white gloves, miniskirts and devotion to the Beatles, is set to conquer New York.
Bebe works at a record company, where she has a dreamy boss. But her stewardess roommate Darlene has just fixed up a double date with two guys in
a British band. Then trouble starts. Bebe and Darlene find one of the guys dead
in his hotel roomand the police make Darlene their main suspect. Loyal Bebe vows to clear her and find the killer.
At this stage, Bebe seems more
caricature than fully realized character, but she has plenty of potential for growth. Overall, this frothy whodunit is a groovy trip back in time. (Apr., 272 pp., $6.50)
