In the aftermath of the Despair, only a handful of the Silent are able to go into the Dream. Among them are Kendi Weaver and Ben Rymar, partners and prospective parents. Caught in a web of political and religious intrigue, they have to fight for custody of their children and avoid being caught in the crossfire.

The political intrigue is, at times, transparent to the point of obviousness; the source of most of the intrigue will be quite clear to the careful reader, but this book's main draw is the relationship between Kendi, Ben and their extended family. The religious aspects are fascinating, and it would have been nice to see more detail about how the interstellar commerce facilitated by the Dream and the religious beliefs worked together.

Set on an intriguing world of trees, dinosaurs and interestingly horselike sentient aliens, Harper's book creates a compelling universe where no one bats an eye at same-sex relationships and, in fact, the portrayal of Kendi and Ben's relationship is refreshingly normal. (Nov., 400 pp., $6.99)
