Lady Jehanne refuses to choose a husband; she'd rather fight on a field of battle. But her father, the Lord of Windermere, warns her she must either choose a husband or be banished to a convent. Then he dies of a fever and a cowardly knight invades her home.
Called "the Reluctant" because he refuses to kill, Fulk de Galliard allowed anger to cloud his mind years ago. The result was the death of his brother. He is sent to vanquish the Lord of Windermere, but he finds the daughter the threat, not the dead sire.
Jehanne is unaware that she stirs Fulk's ardor. It will be his pleasure to teach her the true way of a man and a woman. Fulk's cowardly lion impression belies a heart that is as big as France and bravery that would slay dragons for his true love. The scene between the lovers after Fulk is injured protecting Jehanne is touching and humorous. Knighton's talent shines when Fulk tries to teach Jehanne how to kissand instead the student beguiles the teacher. (Jul., 176 pp., $5.95)
