SOMETHING BORROWED
by Emily Giffin

RT Rating:
Category: CHICK LIT
Publisher: St. Martin's
Published: June 2004
Type: Chick Lit

Rachel has always been the good friend, following along tentatively in her sparkling, albeit selfish, best friend Darcy's shadow. But everything changes when her 30th birthday celebration ends in a one-night stand with Darcy's fiancé, Dex.

The next morning Dex and Rachel admit their mutual shock and guilt over their actions, but they continue to see each other almost up to the day of the wedding.

Rachel decides she's not too crazy about being the other woman, yet she keeps remembering nasty incidents with Darcy that help her justify the affair as a small means of revenge.

Giffin builds suspense well, which keeps readers turning the pages. But some last-minute revelations pave the way for a too convenient and mostly unsat-isfying ending.

Rachel isn't forced to make any hard decisions about her relationships with Dex and Darcy—or herself. All in all, her lack of growth is disappointing. (Jun., 336 pp., $23.95)
