For generations, the Earl of Ashcoms family has supported the Delmeres, and for that, Fantine Delmere has an abiding hatred for the Earl. When she first meets the handsome man, she expresses her disdain at the situation. Furious that anyone dare address him in such a manner, Ashcom dictates that Fantine accompany him to London or hell sell the familys estate.
In London, Ashcoms Aunt Dorothy quickly befriends Fantine, but the girl has a foe in Laura, Lady Vladim, who is supposed to advise her on attaining a proper wardrobe. Laura has her heart set on winning Ashcom and sees Fantine as a threat; the occasional glimpses of hatred Fantine see in Lady Vladims eyes are unnerving.
As the longstanding animosity between the Earl and Fantine turns to attraction, disturbing events occur, causing Fantine to fear for her safety. Will ever-present obstacles get in the way of their happiness?
Writer and artist Gloria Gay has penned a classic Regency complete with appearances by Brummell, Prinny, and Sally Jersey. The attraction between Fantine and Ashcom is gentle as a summer breeze and just as appealing. Add in the plot against Fantine, and the result is a pleasing Regency with
a dash of intrigue. (Dec., 193 pp., $13.95)
