Ms. Goodie Two-Shoes / Mr. Hot Pants
Heart thumping, palms moist, she settles her shaky fingers on the keyboard. Millions of thoughts run through her mind, those that aren't very good...at least that's what her momma had told her as a young girl. Squeezing her eyes closed, pictures of half-dressed men float through her mind and her mouth turns dry. SEX! No, it couldn't be time to write the sex scene, could it? Her religious leader would certainly kick her out of church for fear of a bolt of lighting spearing down from heaven. What about her parents? Would her own husband disown her? Her poor children would have to walk down the streets with their head ducked from now on. But she's a romance writer. It needs to be written! She swallows the lump of fear lodged in her throat and takes a deep breath. Once her eyes are open, she focuses on her story. Reminding herself it's a natural thing, she proceeds, her fingers fly across the keyboard as if they had a mind of their own. His masculine scent of leather and spice fills the air, consuming every breath she takes. In her head, the scene unfolds, the hero sweeps the heroine off into another world where seduction and passion rule. Seeking fingers, curious kisses... The more she writes, the wider her grin spreads. Her heart now beats a different rhythm. Her palms are moist for entirely different reasons this time. And in her chest...love grows. This excitement is the thrill she needs -the energy that gives her the courage to continue and not be afraid.
I don't know about most writers, but I've certainly experienced this a time or two (or three or four) since I first started writing. Those who don't read romance stories label us as 'smut' writers. All we think about is sex - twenty-four hours a day. My husband tells me this numerous times...and it isn't for flattery. But there's a bigger picture. The overall picture that nobody sees but romance writers. We aren't writing about sex - we're writing about love.
HOWEVER...this doesn't mean I'm not going to have sexual tension in my stories. In fact, I live for sexual tension. In one of my critique groups, I've been labeled Queen of Sex Scenes. I've even been called LoverLips. My reviewers have labeled me Queen Of Sexual Tension. Should I be offended? Heck no! I'm thrilled!! Don't tell my husband. He'll just roll his eyes again.
I write Sensual...don't you just love that word? It rolls across your tongue like a lover's passionate kiss. Makes you want to deepen your voice in a sexy tone, lower your lids half-mast and part your mouth. Maybe even swipe your tongue across your dry lips...
Okay, I'm getting carried away again. I need to get back to the point here. You can still be a Goodie-Two-Shoes and write about Mr. Hot Pants. The characters you write about are real to you and especially to your readers. Write about your characters' feelings, about their hearts pounding like a tom-tom against their ribs. Write about sweaty palms, shaky limbs, and out of control breathing. Write about shivers of delight that cascade over your characters bodies, passionate tremors that seem to have a mind of their own. And write about the glorious moment when your characters come together. If you feel like religion should be added, then have one of your characters praise God at that point. But the fact is, these feelings are real! This is real life! You're not writing porn just because you're writing a sex scene. You're writing about love.
And think of the alternative: you could be writing about murder, killing, and torturing other humans. Nah, not for me! I'll stick to romance thank you very much!
I have a list of books on my website that are full of sexual tension. Even my covers are yummy. I just adore my covers, but so far my favorite is from my romantic suspense, DANGER IN HER ARMS.

Taylor Marshal and her daughter need protecting, yet the bodyguard assigned is the one man she fears the most.
Three years earlier, Taylor gave her heart and body to stranger. After a whirlwind affair of unbridled passion, her hopes were crushed when she finds out her lover, Cory Ross, is a hit man. When she witnesses him take another man's life then watches her new found love fall from a cliff after being shot, her heart shatters. The only thing left to soothe Taylor's broken soul is the little life growing inside her. The last thing she expects to find is Cory Ross alive - and back in her life as her own personal bodyguard.
Cory thought his luck had changed after his near death experience in the Bahamas. But when he looks into the eyes of the woman who he suspected had something to do with his accident, he realizes his new assignment to protect Taylor and her young daughter will be pure hell. But to fall in love all over again with Taylor Marshall will be sheer torture.
Also, check out the awesome book trailer.

Ms. Campbell, why have I not heard of this book "Danger In Her Arms"? It sounds fabulous! As one of your avid readers I can personally vouch for your title as Queen of Sexual Tension. Anyone looking for a smokin' hot read need look no further than one of your titles.
Melissa
Dear Phyllis,
I had to laugh out loud reading your blog. Now I am just the opposite. I love writing those...ahem...love scenes. I once had a friend ask me how true to form my sex scenes were. She was afraid it would be like peeking in my bedroom window. ROFL! I told her about my secret sex scene practice room in the basement. Just kidding, of course. No, I had to tell her, sadly enough, it was all in my head. My lively imagination supplied me with enough material.
But like you, living in a different world for my bread and butter, I get the smirks and the laughs. She writes what? But we carry on, swords aloft, heads held high....oh wait, I just had a great idea for a scene. Now I just have to write a historical to go with it.
Cheers,
Rayka

My brother was a beta reaser, he remarked that he thought a scene I wrote was hot. That was kind of icky. But I guess it was good too- in an icky way.
Hey Slave Driver... I don't let my family read my stories, especially if I know there is a LOT of sexual tension (or sex scenes). Because my family thinks it's icky, too. lol
~Phyllis~
Melissa, sweets... Yeah, this is my romantic suspense. You know I always have a little suspense in my stories, but this one has a LOT. I'm getting great reviews, too. Any time you want to read it...it's yours. (grins)
~Phyllis~
Hi, Rayka. I know exactly what you mean! I still have people asking me if my sex scenes are true to life. Oh, I must have such a romantic marriage. (rolls eyes) Even my husband wonders if I write about our sex life. ROFL Don't flatter yourself, hun. heehee
~Phyllis~
Phyllis, loved the blog! And AMEN about writing for love not for sex. People have asked me, then why not write a love story without the sex?
Why should I? Sex is a part of love, in fact, the ultimate culmination of it.
I'm a religious spiritual person as well, and I believe God created sex as a beautiful thing. So why should we be ashamed to write about it? People with lotsa kids are OBVIOUSLY doing it themselves. LOL
My DH was also under the impression I was writing about our lives. Uh, no. I might draw on my own experiences to make the scenes more real, but I'm not writing an expose of my own marriage. Please.
He's actually gotten over his own stigma of what I write. It used to horrify him in the beginning telling people what I do. Now, he seems cool with it. Whatever makes me happy. Honestly? I think it's those royalty checks that have changed his mind. LOL
~~Becka
Becka, we are so much alike, it's scary. lol But...at least your husband accepts what you do. Mine is still embarrassed. I wonder if he thinks I dream about hunky men all the time. Well...I guess I do, right? heehee

Great blog. I love your description of you sitting at the computer!
Jen
Hi, Phyllis,
I can testify to your dual personality. Both sweet and vampy at once. That is a great combination for the "Queen of Sexual Tension." I love your stories. I haven't read Danger in Her Arms," but I am sure it is every bit as good as your others.
My DH loves to tell his buddies that his wife is a romance writer. They tend to look at him with a little more respect after that. After all, if you can make a romance writer happy, you must be good! LOL!
Hi, Jennifer! Thanks for posting! I'm glad you liked my description. It's from personal experience. heehee
~Phyllis~
That's priceless, Diane. I'll make sure my hubby knows. (wink)
Thanks for your kind words. Too sweet!
~Phyllis~
Dear Queen of Sexual Tension,
And, I know for a fact from reading your work that you are indeed the Queen. Anyone who misses out on a Phyllis Campbell book is definitely missing out. :) Looking forward to Spanish Eyes!!
Ginger
I totally agree, Phyllis, although I was scared to death when I had to write my first full-blown love scene. But it gets easier as I go along. I'm working on one for my newest WIP as we speak.
Great post!
Years ago, my former (he who must not be named) sent me to our Bible study teacher's wife when I started fiddling around with writing romance.
Turned out she LOVED romance novels, and she even bestowed upon me the first name in my nom de plume.
So, yeah - I figure God is on the romance writer's side.
:)
G.
Hey Marie!
You are one of the best writers I know and all your books are wonderfully written! I still haven't read Danger in her Arms but I will and Spanish Eyes is next on my list!
Keep up the good work my friend!
Ginger, you are just too kind. Thanks, woman. I'm glad you think so.
~Phyllis~
Susan, I was scared, too. lol But now...well, now, 22 published books later...I have to stop myself from writing my scenes too spicy. heehee I don't write erotic, but I swear, my muse wants to cross over. ROFL!
~Phyllis~
Oh, that's so funny, Genella. I have a few readers who are religious women, too. Yeah, romance (and sex) is part of life. God has to be on our side!!
~Phyllis~
Thanks for making me smile, Brenda. You're too sweet! I'm very excited about my release in Oct - Spanish Eyes. My hero is sooooo yummy!!
~Phyllis~
Hey Phyl:
Great start to your blog, lol. It had me going. I wish I loved writing the sex scenes. They are the hardest, and not because of lack of experience, lol. It's due to not wanted to sound like my h/h are doing bedroom gymnastics!
You certainly are the queen of sexual tension. The title fits you perfectly!
Love ya, gal.
Thanks, Jannine. I'm quite fond of the title myself. (grins) I love writing sexual tension - and yes, even the actual sex scene. Maybe it's because I do NOT get that kind of action in the bedroom. heehee
~Phyllis~
Good blog - a gotcha beginning! Danger in Her Arms sounds yummy! Sexual tension is great in stories! Thanks!
Oh, man, I've been in a bubble. I didn't realize which of your books this was. Now I'm gonna have to get it just to read the end. LOL And yep, Queen of Sexual Tension is a great label. And you're soooo right. Sex is only one facet of a beautiful relationship. Great post.
Martha, thanks for dropping by! I'm glad you agree about sexual tension. I gotta have it - LOTS of it - in my stories.
~Phyllis!
Ciara - darling! No, you haven't been in a bubble. I don't think you critiqued this story at all. A different group did. But it's a fun page turner, that's for sure.
~Phyllis~
ROTFL, Phyllis! You crack me up. Your frankness is refreshing.
I love what you said about writing about love. Sex is indeed a huge part of love. Why else would the Bible tell us "Wife, submit to your husband. Husband, love your wife"?
I LOVE high sexual tension, and always make sure my stories are full of it. However, when it comes to fully drawn sex scenes, I enjoy writing them to a certain point then, I tend to let the reader used her imagination.
I think if the author isn't comfortable writing sex scenes it shows. Then instead of the reader being relaxed and swept away by these scenes, she ends uncomfortable and embarrassed.
I do admire your gift for writing smooth, honest love scenes. You always manage to make them about the romance as opposed to the sex--a definite awe-inspiring gift!
Hugs, hon.
