I Was Lost, But Then I Was FOUND!

REQUIEM FOR A PAPER BAG, Davy Rothbart

This past Friday, I attended a show put on by Davey Rothbart, creator of FOUND! magazine and the author of two compilations from his magazines. It was held at a local brewery and brought in a mix of people, from young hipsters to baby boomers.

Davey shared with us some finds he had been given over the past few weeks as he and his brother toured the country. When he was done, his brother, Peter, sang a few songs inspired by finds he had seen.

I have the first FOUND! compilation and the second is on my wish list. However, while there, I picked up the most recent book Davey has produced: REQUIEM FOR A PAPER BAG. It came out a couple of weeks ago and he read one of the stories in it.

REQUIEM is a collection of essays by actors, writers and all kinds of people about things they have found - everything from frogs, to people, to clothes, to... things best left read. Contributors include Seth Rogan, Paulo Coelho, Tom Robbins, Jim Carroll, Susan Orlean and many, many more. Some entries are fiction inspired by finds the author has made.

The stories are sweet, funny, poignant, gross and overall, entertaining. If you are looking for something a little out of the ordinary, this is a great read. The stories are short enough to be read in spurts but are fascinating enough to keep you reading well into the night.

Davey and Peter will be touring for the next month. Check out their web site to see if they are coming to a city near you. If you missed them this time, sign up to be notified the next time they come around. I promise it's a great show!
