Thusday Workshop Update

Liz French and Stephanie Klose here, reporting from RT 09 in Orlando.

We're just going to dip our toes into a few of the workshops and parties we've attended.

Talking about Sci-Fi Romance at the Starships and Sorcery Panel (SK)

Jade Lee said the way she writes her books is to ask, "What will screw up this really cute guy the most?"

Panelists also discussed the way that the word "science" in sci-fi can scare readers, even though the books are just about characters.

Isabo Kelly pointed out, "Most people on a spaceship don't know how it works anyway."

At the "Give 'em What They Want" historical panel, moderator Kristi Astor (aka Kristina Cook) got into a polite argument with Smart Bitch Sarah Wendell about the book "Twilight." Astor was pro, Wendell not so much.

Both bloggers Jane Litte (Dear Author) and Wendell were plugged in and twittering -- Kathe Robin, RT historical reviewer was not. She commented, here are these two girls with their computers and here I am with my piece of paper.

The ladies discussed what they like and don't like in historicals.

Wendell was delighted to see a "man whore" trend.

The panelists' dislikes were more numerous: they hate amnesia as a "get yourself out of a plot corner" device, books that read like you went "to the romance store," as Litte put it, selected a clutch of plot and character items, then made it a book; silly misunderstandings that could have been cleared up with one conversation; and historical inaccuracies.

Wendell said she dislikes "wallpaper" romances, stories that have 21st-century mindset characters plopped into Regency England.

This is just a teaser from us; there'll be even more coverage to come.

Love,

Liz & Stephanie
Your faithful RT correspondents
