Killing Characters - Good Idea?
Feeling frustrated with your writing? Why not kill off your character? Such were the musings yesterday during some great workshops here in Orlando.
"I have written death scenes for Ash," admits bestseller Melissa Marr, "because it kills me, the decisions she makes." But fans need not fear for Ash's fate, those killer pages are for Marr's own edification only.
Of course there are some authors for whom offing folks is part and parcel of their plot -- mystery authors. Robert Gregory Browne said yesterday during a panel that his wife worries about the sinister plots that inhabit his books -- and that her friends will think he's "dark and weird." But fellow mystery author Lori Avacato assured attendees, those death scenes are "just fiction" -- so we can all rest easy for now.
