Interview with Publicist Becky Scoggins at RT
Becky Scoggins is president and owner of Scoggins Management. I sat down with Becky to talk about why RT is so great for authors from the perspective of a publicist. Becky is also part owner of Twicon, the largest conference for the TWILIGHT community.
RT: What do you do?
Becky Scoggins: Scoggins Management is a full-service PR and marketing firm for authors, as well as actors and musicians. I work a lot with the entertainment industry in general.
RT: Why are you here at RT?
BS: I came to RT for the first time last year. I was very interested to see what the experience was like, because I heard a lot about the parties, the massive gathering of romance authors. I was fairly new to the romance industry in representing authors who write romance because up until that point, I mostly represented nonfiction authors. I represented some children’s fiction, so romance was new to me.
So I get there and the first thing I notice is, well, I notice a couple of things right off the bat. I arrived late, right in the middle of a Mr. Romance photo shoot of some sort and there are girls from the age of like 25 to 65 waiting in line to have their picture taken!
The second thing I noticed is people walking around in costumes, which sort of reminded me of some of the fan cons I had been to before.
The third thing I noticed is that there was a real tight sense of community with romance authors and that’s what drew me in more than anything. Everybody supports their careers for each other and they all seem to know each other in some capacity even if they live across the country. Their critique partners recommend each other and it’s just a great sense of community. There’s not a lot of brutal competition and I never get the sense that romance authors at RT have that kind of vibe for each other.
I really, really enjoyed the break out sessions. Even as someone who is not author, who has no aspirations in that direction, to sit through some of those panels and hear what other industry leaders and successful authors have to say, it gave me insight into new strategies and new ways of thinking for romance authors. Because it is such a different genre to represent. They don’t have a lot of the same opportunities because there are so many romance authors.
This year, and that’s where I met Mary Ann, was RT last year. This time she obviously came of her own accord (see her interview later today), so I just came with her. What I am hoping she gets out of this is the opportunity to build her network, to learn more about other genres, because she is trying to cross over, as well as to just get her name out there.
I am here to meet new authors as well as to promote my existing authors.
RT: Who else do you represent?
BS: I work with a couple of self-published romance authors. But there is another one who is published with Kensington, she has a two-book deal – her name is Pearl Wolf. Her first book came out in March and it’s TOO HOT FOR A SPY. It’s a historical Regency. And her next book, TOO HOT FOR A RAKE, comes out in 2010.
RT: What other projects do you work on?
BS: I do a lot of work in the TWILIGHT community. I represent two girls called the Hilly Wood Show and you can find them at www.thehillywoodshow.com. I also do some work with the cast of TWILIGHT, and I have done a lot of work with them [in relation to the conference]. I am the co-owner of Twilight Partners LLC, which is the country’s largest conference for TWILIGHT. We are gearing up for our conference in July in Dallas.
With TWILIGHT, it’s definitely either you love it or hate it. I love Stephanie Meyer’s writing. I think it’s such a simple style and that’s why people love it. You have different age groups and genders and demographics. The conference has been one of the best learning experiences for me about the entertainment industry. It’s all really fun stuff for me.
RT: Where can people find you online?
BS: At http://www.scogginsmanagement.com/ or you can find more information about Twicon at www.twicon.com.
Thank you, Becky!
