Interview with Elizabeth Hoyt aka Julia Harper

I am a huge fan of Elizabeth Hoyt aka Julia Harper. I was so excited to sit her down and talk to her about both her contemporary and historical novels.

RT: This is not your first time to RT, right?

Elizabeth Hoyt: No, the first one I went to was in Houston. And that was a bit of a culture shock. It was kind of fun to go to my first RT and see all the people in costumes and the screaming in glee, with the hand flutters and the high-pitched voices.

RT: What made you decide to go to RT the first time?

EH: I am very good friends with Jade Lee and she is my critique partner and she is an RT regular for years and years and years. And she said “you must come,” so I decided to come. Last year I was unable to make it.

I like to see the fans, and that is the main reason I like to come to RT is the fans. Because all the other conventions I go to are writers’ conventions, and while writers are fans, too, this is the one that lets me get to meet fans and booksellers that are not writers.

RT: Where are you during this week?

EH: Yesterday was a dialogue workshop, which went well. And I was on a historical panel. We started off gazing at the chandeliers, so there were pictures of us all staring upwards, and then we ended up taking about condoms – which doesn’t usually happen in historical panels, so that was a little bit different. It kind of devolved; a lot of the panels I am on devolve! I was also at Club RT, and I sat with Anya Bast, which was great. I had never met her before. And that is also part of why I like coming here, is meeting other writers. Some writers go to some conferences and not others, so this is great because I can see some I don’t elsewhere.

Today, I am doing a contemporary panel, for my Julia Harper name. And I have an author chat, various genres. And tomorrow, Club RT and the Awards. I am getting Best Historical of the Year (for SEDUCE A SINNER, also up for a RITA this year).

RT: You have a book coming out next week, right?

EH: Yes, TO BEGUILE A BEAST comes out on Tuesday. It’s a beauty and the beast and everyone loves the beauty and the beast stories.

In November, is TO DESIRE A DEVIL, which is the last book of the Four Soldiers quartet. I just got the cover for it and it will go up on the redesigned web site, which launches on Tuesday with TO BEGUILE A BEAST. It’s at www.elizabethhoyt.com.

In January, I had the Julia Harper, FOR THE LOVE OF PETE, which was about a secondary character from HOT. There might not be a Julia Harper next year. That web site is different, it’s www.juliaharper.com.

Thank you, Elizabeth!

Dear Elizabeth,
I have hopes of meeting you in person tomorrow at the RT Booklovers Book Fair. My husband Googled the directions from Ormond Beach. It seems easy enough, but I don't know where to park or how early I need to be there to get in line. I've never been to a Romance Convention and feel very excited. May I bring your previous books for signing? Will books be on sale there?
You certainly are up for the awards this year. That's great! Yesterday AAR posted their review of "To Beguile a Beast", the 6th DIK. You deserve all these awards. Your books are riveting.
Looking forward to tomorrow,
Elaine C.

Elaine,

You can bring books to be signed, they will just be marked at the door with a sticker so you don't get charged for them when you leave. Also, each author there will have books for sale and signing.
